Poker content ideas must be hard to come by. Otherwise, why would so many poker webmasters complain that there is no such thing as “unique poker content”? According to some people, there are only so many ways you can write a review of an online poker site, and it’s impossible to write a unique poker review.
I’m a contrarian. If most people say one thing, you can bet I’m going to assume they’re wrong. And even if they’re not wrong, then there’s still some value in doing the opposite of what they’re doing. Nowhere is that more true than in my quest to create unique poker content.
Since most poker webmasters think it’s okay to create unoriginal poker content, I think there’s tremendous value in creating original, unique poker website content. Here are some poker content ideas that I’m not using. You can use these unique poker website content ideas for your existing poker website, or you can use these ideas to launch a new poker site.
I’d appreciate it, if you do use one of these ideas to launch a new poker site or a new section to an existing poker website, that you provide me with a link. (If you don’t, that’s cool too, but being generous with your links out can pay big dividends, I promise.)
Unique Poker Website Content Idea #1 – Get personal.
Most poker webmasters play poker. So the easiest way to write unique poker website content is to write about your own experiences at the poker table. Not only will you generate unique poker content (no one else, even if they’re playing with you, will perceive the events at your table in the same way as you), but you’ll also generate lots of links with little or no effort. That’s because when you write personal poker experiences, you’ll probably write them down in a blog. And bloggers, even poker bloggers, especially poker bloggers, love to link to other poker bloggers.
So write unique poker content about how much money you won playing poker last week. Write unique poker content about how much money you lost playing poker yesterday. Write unique poker content about the other players at your table. Write unique poker content about the poker book you’re reading right now. Write about the poker tv show you watched on tv last night. Write about other people’s strategy websites.
But be personal about it. Be opinionated. Look at King Cobra Poker for an example of a site where the owner really lets his personality shine through. Or look at Steve Badger’s Play Winning Poker. Or look at Guiness and Poker, from Iggy, the godfather of poker bloggers. You should emulate these poker writers. Not their style, or even their topics, but their personal, opinionated approach.
Unique Poker Website Content Idea #2 – Become a poker fan.
Pick a poker celebrity that you like and become a fan. And not just a fan, but their biggest fan. Sure, there are plenty of profiles of Phil Hellmuth online. But how many websites update their site once a week, or twice a week, or every day, with new content about the adventures of Phil Hellmuth? There is almost always a steady source of news about most poker players, but you don’t have to limit yourself to that. If you created a fan site about Phil Hellmuth, you could write articles about the poker books he’s written. You could write articles about specific strategies from his books, and how well or how poorly those strategies have worked for you.
And if you write the content correctly, you’re not limited to just ranking for “Phil Hellmuth” related keyword phrases. Your article about Phil Hellmuth’s top ten Texas holdem starting hands could easily rank for “Texas holdem starting hands” if you were willing to do the work.
The trick to creating unique poker content focused around the fan site idea is to create enormous volumes of content on the subject of your fan site.
Unique Poker Website Content Idea #3 – Research offline.
I hired a writer to do some articles about some poker rooms for me once. I’d given her a list of information to include in each of the poker room’s profiles, like what stakes they offered, what games, how many tables, etc. On several poker rooms, she couldn’t find the information online, so she sent me an email asking what she should do. I told her to call the poker room and ask the person on the other end of the phone for the information. She didn’t finish the project for me. I guess that making the phone calls and doing the research offline was too much effort in the information age.
But the great thing about getting your information for content from some offline source is that it’s less likely to duplicate information that someone else has already published online. In fact, if you’re doing all your research online, then the chances of creating unique content get a lot smaller. Yeah, you can add your analysis and perspective to the facts you’ve gathered from the other websites, but some pages are purely fact-based, and all of the facts are already available somewhere else online. That’s not unique content.
Any time you’re looking for information online and can’t find it, you have a huge opportunity to create some unique poker website content.
Unique Poker Website Content Idea #4 – Interview someone.
Interviewing people is a great way to generate unique poker content. And the less prominent the interviewee is, the more likely the content is to be unique. Doyle Brunson has been interviewed hundreds of times. How much new information are you going to get by interviewing him?
On the other hand, if you can get an interview with Beanie, for example, you’ve got some unique content.
Interviews also make great link bait.
Unique Poker Website Content Idea #5 – Make up a joke or two.
You don’t even necessarily have to make up a new joke; most jokes have a pretty straightforward structure. But replace the main character in the joke with a poker player, and suddenly you have some unique content. (Okay, maybe it’s not unique, but it’s great link bait, and it’s sort of unique.)
Here’s an example:
Jeremy Enke, Randy Ray, and Wes Young are standing in line to get into heaven. But Saint Peter tells Jeremy Enke, “Heaven’s almost full today. I’m only going to admit people who’ve had really horrible deaths. How’d you die?”
Jeremy Enke says, “Well, I thought my wife had been cheating on me, so today I came home early from the Poker Affiliate Listings office to try to catch her. We live in an apartment on the 25th floor. But I couldn’t find the guy, even though I had a feeling he was there hiding somewhere. Finally, I find him hanging off the balcony, clutching the railing. I was so mad that I started kicking him. He fell 25 stories, but landed in the bushes and didn’t die. I was so mad that I grabbed the fridge and threw it on top of him. And that killed him, finally. But the stress game me a heart attack, and I died too.”
Saint Peter says, “Whoa, that’s a pretty rough day. Come on in.”
Then Randy Ray tries to get into heaven, and Saint Peter tells him the same thing he told Jeremy Enke. Heaven’s pretty close to full today, and he’s only letting in people who died really horrible deaths.
So Randy Ray says, “Well, I had a pretty strange death. I live on the 26th floor of an apartment building, and I do my exercises out on the balcony. But today I fell over the balcony, but luckily I grabbed the railing on the floor below. But then Jeremy Enke saw me and started kicking me and stomping on my fingers. I fell to the ground, but again, luckily, the bushes stopped my fall, and I survived. But then Jeremy Enke threw a refrigerator on top of me, and that killed me.”
And Saint Peter says, “Yeah, that’s a pretty rough way to go. Come on in to heaven.”
Then Wes Young gets to see Saint Peter. And Saint Peter asks him for his story, since he’s only going to let him in if he died a really horrible death. And Wes Young says, “Check this out. I’m hiding inside of a refrigerator…”
Heh. Now that’s great content.
