I read a great post from Michael Martinez at his Best SEO Blog yesterday, and I thought I’d share it here. The post is called The Best Blog SEO Strategy. His mime metaphor is cute, but the real gold comes later in the post, and it’s literally the only SEO advice you really need: “The Best Blog SEO Strategy is to use the blog daily, work it, treat it like it’s the meaning of your life.”
I would contend that this advice applies not only to blogs, but to static sites too. If you treat your site like it’s important, then it will eventually become important. If your website is treated like it’s the meaning of life, you’ll never waste your time on stupid, shady SEO tactics that are bound to fail in the long-term. You won’t publish crap content. You won’t waste money on a fancy design that adds no value to your users and just makes your site load excruciatingly slowly. You won’t plaster ads over 80% of your web pages and leave only 20% of your web page available for content.
When I say that this advice is the only SEO advice you really need, it’s because all of the other good SEO advice you could ever learn will come as a result of following the advice of treating your blog or your website with enormous amounts of respect. You won’t need someone to tell you that lots of good content will make your site money. You won’t need someone to tell you that lame link schemes aren’t worth the trouble All of the SEO mistakes you could possibly make all stem from not treating your website or your blog with the respect it deserves.
Anyway, go read Michael’s post – it’s lots better than mine.
