Who else wants one way poker links? (What are one way poker links? They’re links from sites about poker to your site, where you didn’t have to give a link in order to get them. One way poker links are the opposite of reciprocal poker links.)
But a better question might be WHY do you want one way poker links? There’s a theory that Google penalizes sites for reciprocal linking, but a lot of people don’t seem to understand what reciprocal linking really means. They also misunderstand that Google dislikes “excessive” reciprocal linking, which is a LOT different than just having some reciprocal links.
A reciprocal link campaign is when you have a page (or several pages) listing links to other sites. Those sites link back to you from the links pages on their sites. The effectiveness of this kind of campaign depends on how selective you are about who you’re linking to and from. I’ve had success with websites where I only exchanged links with 10 or 20 sites.
A better way to do reciprocal links is to link to someone else’s content from within your content, and then you ask them to link back to some of your content from within some of their content. Being selective still matters here. But linking to content from content is a hard strategy to penalize.
But if you’re convinced that you need one way poker links still, here are a few ways to get them:
- Directory submissions
- Blog comments
- Forum signatures
- Article syndication
- Social media optimization
- Your own sites
A couple of thoughts on each of these:
Directory submissions still work great, but it’s inadvisable to use a service that offers to submit your site to 800 directories for $29. That’s not the kind of backlink profile you want or need. Choose 5 or 10 great directories and get links from them. Some of the better directories include Best of the Web, GoGuides, and JoeAnt.
Blog comments are pretty old-school, but a lot of blogs still offer “dofollow” links. I wouldn’t limit myself to just commenting on blogs that offer dofollow links though. You’re creating a distinctive footprint if you do that. And never, ever use some kind of automated software to drop blog links for you. That’s just about the lamest strategy you could ever use. Leave real blog comments, participate in conversations, and people will visit your site. You’ll make friends in the industry. Those friends will link to your site.
Forum signatures are about the same as blog comments. All the same guidelines apply. Some people probably receive as much traffic from the massive number of forum signature links as they do from any other source. (If you know who BingoT is, or Dominique at CAP, then you’ve seen the forum signature strategy in action and done in an effective and ethical way.)
Article syndication works great, but it works best when done on a selective basis. Submit articles to high quality websites you like, and give them exclusive rights to the articles. Don’t just submit the same article to 1000 different article directories and hope that you’ll rank well because of it. Get involved in a community of great quality websites where you’ll be proud to have links from.
Social media optimization works if you know how to work it. Certain types of content work better than others for this though. Numbered lists tend to attract links, especially if they’re substantive. Stumble Upon is my favorite site for social media optimization, but other people really like Digg, Delicious, and Reddit. The goal when submitting your content there is to get noticed and mentioned by other bloggers who are looking for something to write about and link to. If you produce remarkable content, then people will remark on it.
Your own sites are the best places to get one way links from. You have complete control over the link placement, the anchor text, and every other aspect of the linking. The more content you create, the more links you can add. And the more content and links you have, the more money you will make.
At the end of the day, the big secret to getting one way poker links is the same as the secret to getting one way links of any kind. Publish remarkable content on a regular basis. Meritorious content is the starting point for getting one way poker links.
